About Trivia
The wedding
dress April is wearing is actually her maternal
grandmother’s wedding dress and veil.
The peach
dress that April wears as the queen and that
Wade is in front of the church the author
made for her brides maids dresses and saved
one in case she had a cute little girl that
would love to use it for dress up.
The white
dress with the blue sash was the authors dress
when she was 12 and she wore it to church
and school banquets. She tacked it up so that
it would be the right length for April to
play in. One day the author saw April outside
in this same dress with the same roller blades
on going down the street in their neighborhood!
The twirly
skirt really was left outside in the back
yard for a while in the dirt.
The spy
outfit was a regular for April and she enjoyed
spying on her mother while her mother was
trying to learn Adobe Photoshop.
The big
blond hair is the hairstyle that Norma shearer
wore in the 1930’s movie Marie Antoinette
and one of the author’s favorite old
movies.
The “blankie”on
April’s head in the snake charmer scene
and as the pretend cast really was April’s
blankie that evolved from the original quilt
blanket made by one of her great grandmothers.
The crutch
that April always used to play with was really
one of those stuffed horse heads on a stick
but it was in storage or thrown out during
our last move and not available for photos.
The toy
room really did look similar in set up but
not in color. The walls in their toy room
were painted like a castle. There were two
big light blue chairs and a T.V. in the room
with April’s play kitchen in the corner.
The kids
did fight like brothers and sisters always
do. Their mother for some reason thought that
her kids would not fight but she was rudely
awaken! They are much better now than they
were! Really!
The kids’
Nana bought the big black rubber snake at
a yard sale for $1 when Wade was only 1 year
old. The author thought she was nuts but it
turned out to be one of the favorite toys
in the toy room and at bath time! They finally
threw it away after the cats chomped it to
death which was a sad day.
The flute/recorder
was one that the author had in college for
one music education class and never played
it again. She still has it collecting dust!
The gator
page had the author and April scratching their
heads when April got the idea to use and old
green afghan knitted by a friend. It was perfect
for the gator skin!
The black
glasses worn by the author in the light bulb
were given to her when she was only eight
or nine years old by her best friend’s
sister (who actually wore them but didn’t
need them anymore) and she has saved them
her whole life to use for weird skits, Halloween
costumes etc.
The author
took the photo accidentally of “Pepper”
that was used for the circus scene when the
cat was yawning.
April really
did catch the fish in the photo and it was
actually in the dark, while it was raining
at a park in Decatur Illinois. Her uncle Bill
told her he would take her fishing again so
she insisted on going in the rain. Her mother,
Nana and Wade sat in the van while her Uncle
Bill (the authors brother) sat out in the
rain with her! Unlike her mother April loves
to fish!
The cook’s
hat is really from Steak N Shake, which is
one of the author’s favorite places
to eat since she grew up only 45 miles from
the original Steak N Shake and sometimes would
go there after shopping with her mother.
The author loves trucks and enjoyed drawing
the little red Ford truck for Wade to drive!
She wishes she had her own to drive around!
The baby
April is feeding near the end of the book
is named “Molly”. April got her
for Christmas from her Nana when she was around
3 or 4 years old and the doll was practically
bigger than she was. April would take her
with her everywhere she went and people had
to look twice to see if it was a real baby
or not. Some servers at one of our favorite
restaurants would even indulge April by bringing
Molly her own high chair to sit in.

The two cats in “What Shall I Pretend
To Be Today?” have both passed on. “Pepper”
had a bad kidney so had to be put down, and
“Cookie” was hit one day by a
vehicle on the busy road near the authors
house.
The name
of the speedboat is the “April May”.
This is the name the author has always called
April since that’s what she wanted to
name her instead of April Marie but she caught
flack from her mother and husband. As a side
note April was not born in the moth of April
but in September so don’t ask her this
question. She hates it! She was named April
because her mother found out on April 29th
that she was having a little girl and since
the name (the date) was already on the little
photo that the nurse printed out it stuck!
The little green kitchen was the color of
the authors play kitchen when she was 3 years
old. She had great fun in her little kitchen!
There were end pages
with photos of the kids for a hardbound book
but were not excluded by Tate Publishing since
the first book was a soft bound. If the book
is eventually printed in hardbound then they
will be included.
The photo were are all from the author’s
personal photos . She has probably taken at
least one million photos of Wade and April.
They have given her the endearing nickname
of “Mammarazzi”
